Licence
The code for every Star Soft game can be downloaded from its own page, and this licence says what
you may do with it. Every download includes a copy, LICENCE.txt.
Copyright (c) 2026 Star Soft. All rights reserved, except for the permissions this licence gives you.
This licence covers the Star Soft games, the Star Soft engine and the Star Soft website: their code, and the pictures, music and sounds the code makes (together, "the software"). It does not cover the work by other people listed in section 9, which keeps its own terms.
In short: you may play, study, change and share the software for free, as long as nobody makes money from it, you give Star Soft clear and prominent credit, and you keep this licence with it. The numbered sections below are the actual terms; this short version is only a guide.
1. What you may do
Star Soft gives you permission, free of charge and worldwide, to use, copy, change and share the software, and anything you make from it (including changed versions, and new games or projects that use any part of it), for non-commercial purposes only, as long as you follow every condition in this licence.
2. Non-commercial only
Non-commercial means that neither you nor anyone else makes money, or tries to make money, from the software or anything made from it. Personal use, hobby projects, learning, teaching, research, and use by schools, charities and non-profit groups are all non-commercial, as long as no money is made from the software.
These are commercial, and are not allowed without Star Soft's written permission:
- selling the software, a changed version of it, or anything made from it;
- charging for downloads, access or play, or for anything that includes the software;
- showing adverts or sponsorship with or inside the software, or offering in-game purchases or paid extras;
- including the software in a paid product, subscription, service or app;
- using the software in work that someone pays you to do.
Recording or streaming yourself playing the games, unchanged, is allowed, even on a channel that earns money, as long as you name the game and Star Soft.
3. Credit: clear and prominent
Whenever you share the software or anything made from it, or let other people play or use it (for example on a website), you must credit Star Soft prominently, with the words "Based on [the name of the Star Soft game, or "the Star Soft engine"] by Star Soft", and a link to the Star Soft website wherever a link is possible.
"Prominently" means all of these:
- on the title screen or start screen of every game or program that uses the software, in text that is easy to read and stays on screen long enough to read;
- on every web page, store page, download page or post where you offer it, near the top, in text at least as large and easy to see as its main description;
- for a video or live stream of a changed version, on screen at the start and in the description.
Putting the credit only in the code, in a credits file, in small print, in end credits, behind a menu, or anywhere else it is hard to see does not count.
4. Keep this licence and the notices
Include a copy of this licence with every copy of the software you share, and do not remove or change the copyright notices, this licence, or the credits that come with the software.
5. Changed versions
If you change the software, you must say clearly, next to the credit, that your version has been changed and by whom, for example: "Based on Kingdom by Star Soft. Changed by Jo Bloggs." You must not suggest that Star Soft made, checked, approves of or supports your version.
6. Names
This licence gives you no right to use the name Star Soft or its logo, except to give the credit in section 3. Do not use them as the name or brand of your own work. The names of other companies' games mentioned on the Star Soft website or in the software belong to their owners, and this licence gives you no rights to them.
7. Anything else
To do anything this licence does not allow, including any commercial use, ask Star Soft for written permission first.
8. If you break the licence
If you break any of these terms, your permission ends automatically. If it is the first time, and you put things right within 30 days of finding out, your permission comes back as if it had never ended.
9. Other people's work
Some parts of the software come from other people. They keep their own terms, which this licence does not restrict:
- The music in the Star Soft intro, and the longer versions in music/, is "Mars, the Bringer of War" from The Planets by Gustav Holst (published 1921), which is in the public domain. The arrangements are part of the software.
- The notes of the complete orchestral version (music/star-soft-mars.mp3, and tools/music/mars/mars_notes.json) were read from the OpenScore edition of The Planets, released under CC0 1.0 (a public domain dedication): https://openscore.cc/
- The instrument sounds in engine/intro/sounds/ and in the orchestral recording music/star-soft-mars.mp3 are made from the VSCO 2 Community Edition by Versilian Studios, released under CC0 1.0 (a public domain dedication): https://github.com/sgossner/VSCO-2-CE
- The coastline of Britain and Ireland in games/racer/src/data/britain.js is simplified from Natural Earth (public domain, https://www.naturalearthdata.com/), via the world-atlas package, whose licence is:
